One of the most important theories of revisionist orientalists is the gradual formation of Islam from a primitive monotheistic religion that emerged in the form of Islam during the Umayyad period.
In the book “Crossroads to Islam: The Origins of the Arab Religion and the Arab State”, Novo and Koren explain this theory based on archaeological evidence and early Syriac texts of Islam. One of the main axes of this theory is the creation of the personality of the Prophet (PBUH) during the period of Abdul Malik bin Marwan, and therefore the religion of the Arabs in this period was called "Muhammadianism".
Considering the spread and wide influence of this view in scientific societies and the spread of reference to Syriac texts in the analysis of the events of early Islam, the following article evaluates this view based on the Syriac texts of early Islam using the method of historical-critical analysis.
The results of the research show that the theory of Nevo and Koren about the emergence of the personality of the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) is not based on a scientific method in using Syriac texts related to the first period of the formation of Islam, and it provides an incorrect explanation of these texts.
Among the ancient Syriac texts, the Report of 637 AD, the Chronicle of 640 AD, the Chronicle of Khuzestan, the Chronicle of Maronite, and the Book of Main Points have mentioned Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and the first three texts were definitely written before the reign of Abdul Malik bin Marwan.
