Gerald Hawting, an English orientalist, emphasizes idolatry as the central feature of pre-Islamic Arabian religion, seeing it specifically as the worship of idols by a particular group. This study, through a descriptive-analytical approach, critiques this view based on Allameh Tabatabai’s Quranic exegesis. Allameh offers a comprehensive interpretation linking disbelief (kufr) closely with polytheism (shirk), expanding the scope beyond idolaters to include Jews and Christians. According to him, many Quranic verses addressing shirk and kufr also encompass the followers of other revealed monotheistic religions. Therefore, Al-Mizan's interpretation suggests that the Quran presents a broader and more inclusive understanding of disbelief and polytheism than Hawting’s limited notion. Consequently, Hawting’s reduction of pre-Islamic Arabian religion to mere idolatry is incomplete and fails to capture the Quran’s comprehensive perspective on these concepts, which include all forms of deviation from monotheism and religious truths
