A comparative study of the structural approach of Neuwirt and Jurjani in the literary analysis of the Qur’an

Document Type : Original Article

Abstract
Neuwirth’s structural approach expresses the application of the “synchronism”
and “diachronism” method alongside each other. She considers the “synchronism”
method in the study of the Qur’an as an inefficient method that is not able to analyze
the method of interaction of the Qur’an with the common context of its time and as a
result, does not reveal the uniqueness and creativity of the Qur’an.
Like Jurjani, Neuwirth’s structural approach is not unique to synchronic semantics.
She examines the literary structures of Surahs in the context of history and thus ex-
plains their function and purpose.
In this article, the researcher has analyzed Neuwirth’s structural theory by using the
descriptive-analytical approach. The results of the research show that she, like Jurjani,
has considered the structures in the context and history of their formation by applying
the temporal method. Among the literary structures that Neuwirth examined in the his-
torical context and with regard to the context of the Surah, are the rhyme and the cluster
of oaths of the Qur’an. Neuwirth’s approach expresses the innovations and indepen-
dence of the Qur’an, not its adaptation and copying from previous holy sources
